Nail Surgery

Blackwater Podiatry is delighted to offer nail surgery for painful ingrown toenails.

An ingrown toenail develops when the sides of the toenail grow into the surrounding skin. This causes the skin to become red, swollen and tender. An ingrown toenail may become infected without treatment and antibiotics may be required.

Nail surgery may be recommended if the problem reoccurs.

Depending upon the severity of symptoms this may involve either a

Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA) whereby the nail edge (or edges) is/are removed

or

Total Nail Avulsion (TNA) whereby the whole nail is removed.

The procedure

You will feel no pain during the procedure as a local anaesthetic is used. After the removal of the nail, a chemical called phenol will be applied to the exposed nail bed. Phenol prevents regrowth by destroying the nail cells. However, some nail regrowth can occasionally occur at a future date.  Healing can take between 4 to 8 weeks.

After surgery, a sterile dressing will be applied to the toe. The first redressing will be undertaken within 3 days of the surgery. You will be monitored at the clinic until your toe has completely healed.
